  • Coppell says no one is leaving in January. (http://www.readingfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/NewsDetail/0,,10306~960110,00.html)
What do you guys think? Should we sell Sidwell now and use that money to get new players, hope to sign him and risk losing him on a free in the summer or just let him go? I agree with Coppell that we need to keep him and hope we can work something out.

  • The interviews that I was reading from him made it sound like he wanted to make sure that Reading was committed to advancing. I assume that he meant that there would be serious investment to make a move at Europe hardware. I don't think that we could meet either requirement. I fear unless Madjeski does sell to a multi billionaire the best we can hope for is to hang around with the next 4 in the table.

that he started talking about ambition when Reading were sitting sixth in the table ( even if had been top half ) was not a good sign for us to retain his services. a Reading that gets ambitious as possible is going to shoot for a 5, 6, 7, 8 finish. Much as I would love to be wrong, we're not busting into the top four.
Even if we qualify for Europe, I'll start next season worrying about staying up for a third year. Maybe that's just me.
But, as noted, if he's off to Chels for 45k, or Celtic for 35k, best of luck to him.

  • We're not going to sign a player of his caliber cheaply, so figuring transfer fee and salary demands of a player at his level, it's got to be cheaper to sign him again for the next several seasons, (give him a sale clause if we go down). But the money on offer for him is pretty much what Fae would cost, and Fae would be his replacement. I'd rather add Fae to Sidwell, give us more options.
The money coming in next year is so huge that Reading can afford to change the salary structure a bit, though with relegation clauses, of course.

  • Keep him, definately. Even if a future replacement is found, keep Sidwell as the other player gets integrated into the team.

  • Okay, the tabs are now saying Chelsea is targeting Sidwell. In fact, he's JM's number one target for the summer. I like sidwell, a lot, as a player, but I find this hard to believe. Still, if it's true, and Chelsea is offering pds 45k a week, and is facing stiff comp from Celtic, city and boro to sign him, he's gone. Can't say I disagree with the strategy of letting him play out the contract then leave. He's been great all year.
But at 45k, looks like we need a replacement.

  • If he goes to Chelsea, how the hell will he ever play? I love Sids, but they force themselves into a less than ideal formation which because they have too many central midfielders already. Lampard, Ballack, Essien, Makalele, Mikel, Diarra. Celtic I could see though. Good money, a chance to play, Champions League. Hell, I'd probably go there if I were him.

If its Chelsea or Celtic who sign him then I say good luck to him hopefully he can see the starting 11 (I'm thinking he could at Celtic), and I wouldn't hold it against him. He has been an integral part of getting the club where they are. If he goes off to Boro or City I would be upset. It wouldn't take away what he did for us, but I wouldn't hold him in as high regard.

  • I agree. when I said "the best we can hope for is to hang around with the next 4 in the table", I meant sitting 5,6,7 or 8. ie the TOP four are 1,2,3 and 4 the NEXT four would be 5,6,7 and 8. I guess that was pretty unclear now that I think about it.

  • Sounds like he's keen on demonstrating his commitment to the club...or at least proving his worth to any side that's interested.
